Chestdiseasespecialists.co.uk - Pleural Plaques

The term pleural plaques refers to areas of scarring on the lining of the lungs (pleura). They are usually small, benign patches of thickening that can eventually become hardened (known as calcified plaques). Mostly, they develop around 10 to 20 years from the time of exposure to asbestos.

Generally pleural plaques do not cause any symptoms unless they are very widespread. They are more an indication of a history of previous asbestos exposure. Anyone diagnosed with pleural plaques is at a small but significant increased risk of developing other asbestos related diseases, such as mesothelioma.

Pleural plaques are a form of scarring of the outer lining of the lung. Although pleural plaques do not normally cause any symptoms they are an indication of previous exposure to asbestos.
People diagnosed with Pleural plaques, often become anxious about whether they will develop a fatal asbestos related illness in the future, such as mesothelioma.

In the past it was possible for people suffering from pleural plaques to recover compensation. A recent test case in the House of Lords decided that compensation can no longer be awarded for pleural plaques. However, if you have been diagnosed with pleural plaques or any other form of asbestos related disease you should still contact us for free expert advice.

Silicosis
Silicosis is a completely preventable but incurable occupational lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust most often found in the air of mines, foundries, blasting operations, and stone, clay and glass manufacturing facilities.

When silica is cut, broken, drilled or crushed small particles are released into the atmosphere that can be inhaled causing the respiratory disease known as silicosis. If exposure is due to the negligence of an employer in failing to provide a clean atmosphere and environment then a silicosis compensation claim can be instigated for damages for personal injury. The main categories of the disease are:

  • Chronic - affects workers who inhale small amounts of crystalline silica over 10 to 20 years.

  • Complicated - develops in some chronic sufferers. The function of the lungs is reduced and heart disease may occur. Symptoms include breathlessness, weakness, chest pain and cough.

  • Acute - affects workers who are exposed to large amounts of crystalline silica over several months. Early acute symptoms are difficulty breathing, weight loss, fever and cough however the disease progresses quickly and may lead to severe disability.

If you suffer from Silicosis as a result of your employers failure to protect your health and safety we can help you to get the compensation you deserve.

If you would like free advice, just use the helpline or complete the claim form.

Our staff are professional, sympathetic to your needs and have excellent knowledge on respiratory diseases within the claims sector.
